I'd been thinking about it for quite a while. I think the first time i mentioned it to anyone was when Cosmologic did Miff Moles show on KSDS 88.3FM. We were talking in the parking lot after the show and i mentioned i'd been thinking about starting a large ensemble. It seemed like a good idea, so i set up two gigs and wrote two hour long pieces for the Skeleton Key Orchestra (greg buhlerts title). I had worked in a few creative music orchestras (Alan Lechuszas Side A/B, George Lewis), and putting that together with my background experience in wind symphonys, orchestras and traditional big bands, i was very excited about the possibilities of bringing together so many different musical associates in one large context. My early thoughts were to have the orchestra be made up of several current working bands i was involved in (Return To One, Cosmologic, NOD), several other groups involving orchestra members (Spectrum Quartet, Christopher Adler Trio) and some ad hoc groupings that seemed to work well (Fjellestad/Lechusza/Hubbard). I also tried to involve as many Trummerflora members as possible. Bay Area based trio Mosthumbz was also scheduled to perform, but due to several different conflicts each member cancelled. Michael flew out from Amherst for the concerts, Joey came in at the last second to save my ass, and we had a functioning ensemble. The lineup at this point consisted of four percussionists (two drumkits), two basses, cello, guitar, 2 electronics, three trumpets, three trombones, five woodwinds and conductor.

So many thoughts and memories, like the excitement from the first run-thru of raincastle, when Buhlert came up to me in the middle of it all and screams in my ear "sounds fucking amazing!", or, after a ridiculusly frantic soundcheck, the excitement in the MCs voice when she announced the group for the radio broadcast on 88.3. And yes, flakey trombone players, girlfriends getting in the way of the music, woodwind players that hate everyone, et al. Two gigs that were positive and negative in the best possible ways - limitless choices for the future. -NMH
